Rotary airlock range

The documented Smoot range starts with the Type 1 basic rotary valve for non-abrasive products, dust collectors and general feeding duties. Magnum lists sizes from 7 to 30 inches and high-temperature configurations up to 500°F for this family.

The wider portfolio adds abrasion-resistant, corrosion-duty, stainless-steel and ceramic abrasive-duty configurations. A WFI airlock family addresses baghouse and dust-collector discharge. These are different engineering responses to wear, chemistry, temperature and leakage; they are not interchangeable labels.

Where the equipment fits

A rotary airlock can meter solids from a hopper, discharge collected dust or introduce material into a pneumatic conveying line while limiting gas leakage. The same shell size can behave very differently when bulk density, pocket filling, pressure differential or rotor speed changes.

Non-abrasive flour-like powders may suit a basic configuration. Mineral fillers, glass-filled compounds or hard particles can require replaceable tips, hardened surfaces or ceramic protection. Corrosive products shift the discussion toward metallurgy and coating compatibility.

Selection and sizing

Start with the material. Record loose and aerated bulk density, particle-size distribution, moisture, abrasiveness, cohesiveness, temperature and any tendency to smear, pack or degrade.

Then define the duty. State whether the valve is a feeder, an airlock or a dust-discharge device. Include required mass flow, upstream and downstream pressure, leakage allowance, inlet geometry, operating speed and expected fill factor.

Nominal displacement is only the geometric starting point. Real capacity depends on pocket fill, product de-aeration, inlet restriction and pressure-driven leakage. A generous safety factor cannot rescue a poor inlet or a rotor that shears the product.

Wear, clearances and maintenance

Abrasive material enlarges rotor-to-housing clearances over time. Leakage rises, feeding stability deteriorates and the pressure boundary becomes less effective. Inspection therefore needs measurable acceptance limits rather than a quick look through the inlet.

Maintenance planning should cover tip condition, endplate wear, shaft seals, bearings, gearbox load and alignment. Access space matters too. A theoretically serviceable valve is not very serviceable when the rotor cannot be withdrawn past a nearby column.

Food, chemical and combustible-dust boundaries

Stainless steel does not automatically make an airlock hygienic. Product-contact finish, crevices, seals, cleanout access, drainability and the validated cleaning procedure all matter. Confirm the exact construction and documentation for the intended food or pharmaceutical duty.

A rotary valve used as explosion isolation needs a specifically assessed configuration. Blade rigidity, gap width, gap length, certification and installation conditions govern that function. A standard feeder should never be assumed to be an explosion barrier.
