Portable batching from bulk containers

Purpose: Porta-Batch replaces manual scooping between containers with a mobile conveying and weighing system.

IEDCO documents a package containing the vacuum conveyor, rotary valve, controls, integrated scale and a roller track for loading and removing small receiving containers.

How batch accuracy is established

The scale measures the receiving container and its contents. The controls stop or trim material delivery as the target is approached.

Actual accuracy depends on scale resolution, vibration isolation, in-flight material, valve behavior, line cleanout and the powder’s flow pattern.

A factory or site test should cover several target masses and container changes, not one convenient batch.

Integration and operation

The source may be a drum, Gaylord box or another bulk container. The receiver, discharge valve and roller track must suit the container opening and dust-control arrangement.

Moving the system between areas introduces recipe, destination and cleaning-control questions. Operators need a clear way to confirm the material, target, container and released equipment state.

• Container sizes, closure method and roller-track load.
• Coarse and fine feed strategy near the setpoint.
• Cleaning and line-clearance procedure between materials.

Portable batching can remove a lot of awkward manual work. It also moves the control boundary with the machine, so utilities and data connections have to be as deliberate as the wheels.

Feeding dynamics near the target

In-flight material: Powder between the shutoff point and receiving container continues to fall after the stop command. The controller can compensate only when that quantity is repeatable. A leaking rotary valve, variable aeration or material retained in the receiver turns the final trim into guesswork.

Coarse transfer should deliver most of the batch quickly. The final approach may use pulsed feeding, a lower valve speed or another controlled trim mode. The chosen method must remain stable across bulk-density variation and the full target-weight range.

Verification and changeover

Qualification should challenge minimum and maximum batches, repeated container taring, power interruption and an aborted transfer. Reconcile the source loss, receiver inventory and packaged mass when material value or traceability demands it.

Cleaning is part of the batching method. Identify product traps in the receiver, valve, flexible hose and frame, then define inspection and release criteria before the next material. Electronic records should preserve setpoint, actual net weight, lot identity, operator actions and alarms without allowing an unrecorded manual top-up.
