How High Containment & Powder Sampling works

Containment and representativeness must be designed together. A sample taken safely can still give a misleading result if the powder has segregated or the sampling location captures only one part of the stream. A representative sample can still create unacceptable exposure if opening, transfer or cleaning releases material.

Define the containment target

  2. Use closed transfer and contained connections.
  3. Enclose residual release points.
  4. Maintain inward airflow where an opening is necessary.
  5. Use a contained sampling device suited to the stream.
  6. Recover waste and clean equipment without reopening exposure.

Glove boxes, isolators, split valves, contained liners and local extraction solve different interface problems. Selection should follow the task and acceptance criteria rather than a generic containment label.

Verification and lifecycle control

Commissioning should challenge representative operations, including connection errors and cleaning. Measure exposure at relevant operator positions and record airflow or pressure indicators that can support routine monitoring. Surface sampling may supplement air measurements where transfer contamination matters.

Repeat verification after changes to material, rate, operator method, seals, extraction or cleaning. Maintenance should preserve the tested configuration and define safe replacement of contaminated components.
