Application
Shut-off and Isolation under Mineral Silos
Answer in brief
Under a mineral silo the gate has to close against a column that is heavy, abrasive and sometimes consolidated.
The force required is far higher than the empty-silo figure, and the blade is a wear part from the first operation.
- Size the actuator for the loaded column plus consolidation.
- Expect to replace blades and seats on a schedule.
- Make the closed position provable for maintenance work.

The problem
Heavy mineral columns load the blade, and abrasive fines erode the seat until the gate no longer closes tightly.
Lumps that passed the screen jam a blade that was sized for the nominal product.
Desired outcome
A gate that closes against the real column, can be proven closed before anyone works downstream, and opens again without damage.
Process approach
Knife and roller designs with replaceable liners handle this duty; the roller arrangement reduces the friction against the blade and lowers the required force.
Seat protection and blade hardfacing extend the interval, and both are specified as consumables with a planned replacement.
For maintenance isolation the gate needs a lockable closed position and an independent means of confirming it, because a partially closed gate under a full silo is a trap.
- Actuator sized for a loaded and consolidated column.
- Replaceable blade and seat protection.
- Lockable, indicated closed position for permits.
Selection factors
- Column height, bulk density and consolidation behavior.
- Largest particle that can reach the gate.
- Abrasiveness and the expected blade and seat life.
- Isolation requirements for work below the silo.
- Access and lifting provision for blade replacement.
Common failure modes
- Actuator stalling against a loaded column
- Lump jamming the blade after a screen failure
- Seat eroded until the gate no longer seals
- Maintenance started under a gate that was not provably closed
