Application
Valve and Airlock Selection for Food Powder Lines
Answer in brief
In a food plant the valve is judged by how fast it can be opened, cleaned and put back.
Allergen changeover and residue in a valve pocket cause more recalls than mechanical failure does, and fragile products are damaged by the same clearances that keep the air out.
- Specify the cleaning method first, then the valve.
- Watch the clearance: tight for gas, gentle for the product.
- Treat the valve as part of the allergen plan.

The problem
Food lines run several recipes through the same equipment, and every pocket, seat and shaft seal is a place where the previous product can remain.
At the same time many food products are fragile, so a valve that shears granules turns saleable product into fines.
Desired outcome
A valve that is demonstrably clean after the agreed procedure, releases no dust into the room and does not degrade the product it passes.
Process approach
Quick-clean rotary valves with a rotor that can be withdrawn without breaking the line are the usual answer where changeover frequency is high.
Where the valve sits under a filter or cyclone, the duty is dust tight discharge rather than metering, and a double flap arrangement can be the simpler choice.
For fragile products the rotor tip clearance and the pocket geometry matter: tight clearances cut granules, and sharp edges produce fines that show up at the packer.
- Crevice-free internals, radiused corners and no horizontal ledges.
- Seals and lubricants rated for food contact.
- Access that allows inspection without dismantling the surrounding pipework.
Selection factors
- Allergen matrix and the cleaning method that must be validated.
- Product fragility and the acceptable fines increase across the valve.
- Changeover frequency, which decides whether quick-clean pays.
- Dust explosion characteristics, since most food powders are combustible.
- Whether the valve has to act as an explosion isolation device, which requires a certified design.
Common failure modes
- Residue in the rotor pocket carried into the next recipe
- Granule damage at tight rotor clearances
- Shaft seal leaking dust into a hygienic zone
- Standard process valve assumed to provide explosion isolation

ACS Quick Clean Rotary Valve Demonstration
In this 65-second ACS Valves clip, a presenter opens a Quick-Clean rotary valve without tools: handles release, the rotor and endplate slide out on RotorRail supports, and a locating key guides reassembly. What the demo establishes is physical access to the product-contact zone — cleaning validation and sanitary certification still depend on the supplied model and the site's procedure.
