Material
Pulverized Coal
Answer in brief
With pulverized coal the handling system is a fire safety system that happens to move material.
The powder is fine, combustible and capable of heating itself in a silo, so inerting, monitoring and prompt detection are the design basis rather than additions.
- Design every enclosure for explosion protection and isolation.
- Monitor temperature and carbon monoxide in storage.
- Avoid dead zones where material can sit and oxidise.

Handling challenges
Coal milling and firing systems are designed by fire risk first and by throughput second, which is the right order.
Self-heating
Coal oxidises slowly at ambient temperature, and in a silo with poor ventilation the heat accumulates.
Carbon monoxide rises before temperature does, which makes gas monitoring the earlier indicator of a developing problem.
- Avoid stagnant zones and promote first-in, first-out flow.
- Monitor temperature at multiple depths and carbon monoxide in the headspace.
- Have an inerting and extinguishing plan for the silo before it is filled.
Explosion protection
Mills, classifiers, filters and conveying lines all contain explosible clouds in normal operation.
Inerting with flue gas or nitrogen, explosion venting where inerting is not practical, and isolation between vessels form the standard protection set.
Flow behavior
Fine coal with moisture is cohesive and bridges over outlets, while dry fines flood.
Silo design from measured flow properties, mass flow geometry and mechanical discharge aids give control in both states.
Wear
Ash minerals and pyrite make coal more abrasive than its own hardness suggests, so bends and feeder parts need protection.
What to establish before buying equipment
- Coal rank, volatile content and self-heating tendency.
- Explosion characteristics of the milled product.
- Moisture range and its effect on flow.
- Inerting medium availability and the monitoring strategy.
Material behavior
- Flowability
- Variable, cohesive when fine and moist
- Abrasiveness
- Moderate, rising with ash and pyrite content
- Cohesiveness
- Moderate to high
- Moisture behavior
- Moisture worsens flow and promotes self-heating
